Capt. Murray D. McLaughlin served with the 309th and is credited with seven aerial victories, including two Me 109s on 13 June 1944 that made him an ace. The P-51B introduced the two-stage Merlin 60 series engine to the Mustang, giving the fighter the high-altitude performance and range needed for bomber escort.
